Kia has started manufacturing the EV5 model for shipment to China

Kia has just electrified the EV scene with the global launch of the EV5! Previously a China-exclusive electric SUV, the EV5 is now hitting the road in both left-hand and right-hand drive markets, bringing Kia’s advanced electric vehicle technology to a wider audience.

Spotted at the recent Bangkok International Motor Show (BIMS) in a right-hand drive configuration, the EV5 is confirmed for Thailand, with Australia likely to follow. This compact electric SUV features a design reminiscent of its larger sibling, the EV9, but in a more manageable size.

Built on Kia’s 800V E-GMP platform, the EV5 ensures efficient performance and rapid charging. Here’s what sets it apart:

Powertrain
  • Global markets will get an all-wheel-drive option delivering 230 kW and a swift 0-60 mph time of just 6.1 seconds.
  • A rear-wheel-drive variant with a single 160 kW motor is available in select regions.
  • A high-performance GT model is in the works—stay tuned for an even more thrilling ride!
Battery Options
  • Battery capacity varies by market, with options including 64.2 kWh and 88.1 kWh packs, offering a range of up to 450 miles (CLTC) on a single charge.
  • While China gets BYD’s LFP Blade batteries, other regions may see NMC batteries in use.
  • Regardless of battery type, the EV5 supports V2L (Vehicle-to-Load) and V2G (Vehicle-to-Grid) capabilities, making it a versatile power source.
Tech and Comfort
  • The driver-focused interior features a sleek dual 12.3-inch display setup, merging the instrument panel with the infotainment system for a seamless experience.
  • A convenient 5-inch display handles climate controls.
  • Kia prioritizes sustainability with eco-friendly materials, including recycled PET fabric and Bio-PU leather seat options.
  • For added practicality, the rear seats fold completely flat, ideal for maximizing cargo space.
Production and Future Plans
  • The EV5 is produced at Yueda Kia’s advanced manufacturing facility in China.
  • Yueda Kia has ambitious goals, aiming to export 200,000 vehicles annually by 2026, expanding into 80 countries.

The EV5 represents a significant step for Kia, reinforcing its commitment to electric mobility on a global scale. With its impressive range, powerful performance options, and focus on sustainability, the EV5 is set to be a strong contender in the rapidly evolving electric vehicle market.
